The Flag Whisperer of Just a Girl Woodworking
It Started With Upside-Down Stars
Just a Girl Woodworking started entirely by accident. I was doing a few DIY projects around the house when I found myself with some extra boards — and a YouTube tutorial on how to make an American flag.
Right after cutting the wood, I had to undergo carpal tunnel surgery on my dominant hand. Too stubborn to sit still, I sat down post-surgery to paint it anyway. With my hand all bandaged up, I painted the stars completely upside down.
But looking at that flawed little piece, something shifted. I fell deeply in love with the whole concept — the idea that you can take raw wood and create something spectacular. Something with meaning, soul, and history.
“I realized you can take raw wood and create something spectacular that possesses meaning, soul, and history.”
The Flag Whisperer
I call myself the Flag Whisperer, because I can look at a raw board and know exactly what kind of flag it needs to be. Every board has something it wants to become — my job is to listen.
If I don't listen, and I force a board into something I want instead of what it wants to be, it'll sit on my wall of shame until I fix it and make it what it was born to be.
That's why no two pieces are ever alike. Each one is hand-carved, burned, and finished by hand — built as an heirloom to be passed down for generations.
A Family Trade
Today my workshop is a place of family legacy. My granddaughter works right alongside me, learning the trade and crafting her very own custom wood pieces. Everything I know, I'm passing down — one board at a time.
The Dream
I sell face-to-face at craft fairs, gun shows, and carnivals, as well as online — and my flags are already hanging in 10 to 15 states.
My ultimate goal? A piece in all 50 states — and one day, a custom flag for the President of the United States.
